Ahafo region records 10 maternal deaths in 2021

The Ahafo Region recorded 10 maternal deaths in 2021, Dr Boakye Boateng, the Ahafo Regional Director of Health said on Wednesday.

Neonatal deaths however, declined, dropping from 7.1 percent per 1,000 births in 2020 to six percent per 1,000 in 2021, he said.

Dr Boateng said the region also exceeded it’s targeted 44 percent family planning acceptor rate, achieving 55 percent success within the year under review.

Describing the recorded cases of maternal deaths as unacceptable, Dr Boateng tasked the health workers to do more and encourage pregnant women in local communities to attend regular antenatal clinics and urged pregnant women to desist from delivering in homes to help bring the disturbing situation under the barest minimum.

The Regional Director said this when he addressed the opening session of the 2021 Annual Performance Review Meeting held on the theme “essential services continuity in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic: leveraging on public health and clinical care synergy” held at Goaso, the regional capital.

Dr Boateng explained there was sharp improvement in Out Patients Department (OPD) attendance, and commended the health workers for their hard work, hoping that with their support, the region would achieve significant successes in 2020 despite some daunting challenges confronting health care delivery.

In a speech read on his behalf, Mr George Yaw Boakye, the Ahafo Regional Minister also commended the health workers and staff of the regional health directorate for their selfless and dedicated services in helping to particularly prevent tye spread of the COVID-19 in the region.

He indicated the devastating impact of the COVID-19 remained enormous and urged the people to always wear their nose masks in public places, wish their hands with soap under running water, as well as use alcohol-based hand sanitizers and ensure good environmental hygiene.

The directorate later honoured and presented plaques to institutions and individuals for their contributions towards enhancing quality healthcare delivery in the region.
