Report indiscipline officers, Police commander tells drivers
The Commissioner of Police (COP) Godfred Owusu Boateng has advised commercial drivers to pick identity, and report police personnel who misconduct themselves on roads and highways.
He emphasized the police administration would not tolerate or shield any indiscipline officer whose behaviour would dent the image of the service.
COP Boateng reminded drivers only officers from the rank of an Inspector could seize their driving license, however all ranks of police officers could check driving license.
The Regional Commander gave the advice when speaking at the Bono Regional launch of the road safety campaign organized by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) held at Berekum in the region.
On the theme “Stay Alive”, the regional office of the Authority designed the campaign to outline its Christmas activities and programmes aimed at reducing road crashes before, during and after the Christmas festivities.
COP Boateng said modern policing required collective approach, and advised drivers and passengers to be vigilant and help control crime wave in the festive season.
Mr Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, the Bono Regional Director of the NRSA, explained the campaign would further intensify enforcement on accident prone areas in the region, and advise drivers to check their tryes, lighting systems and renew their road worthy and insurance certificates as well..
He said ensuring safety on the road required collective and shared responsibility, and advised passengers to also check drivers against over-speeding and endeavour to wear their seat belts whenever they boarded vehicles.
Mr Boateng expressed appreciation to the Regional Coordinating Council, the police and road sector agencies for their contribution towards ensuring sanity on the road, and expressed the optimism that with deepened collaboration, road crashes would be brought under the barest minimum in the region during the yuletide.
Meanwhile, commercial drivers in the municipality said they were unhappy about the deplorable condition of roads and highways in the region.
They therefore appealed to the Department of Urban Roads to reshape the roads which had developed several potholes, thereby contributing to road accidents.
Speaking in an interview with Skynews, the drivers said potholes developed on the Berekum-Dormaa, Berekum-Drobo, Berekum-Seikwa, and Berekum-Sunyani stretches were making driving difficult particularly at night.
Mr Kwasi Yeboah, one of the drivers said the drivers had reported unpleasant conditions of the roads to the GPRTU, but nothing had been done on the matter, and called on the government to intervene.
